European Defence Fund – BattleVerse: up to €60,000 for SMEs with simulation and AI software

European Defence Fund (EDF) · EUDIS cascade funding via the BattleVerse project

Κοινοπραξία του έργου BattleVerse, με χρηματοδότηση από το Ευρωπαϊκό Ταμείο Άμυνας (BattleVerse project consortium, funded by the European Defence Fund – grant agreement 101224034)

In plain words

Up to €60,000 (a lump sum covering up to 100% of staff costs) for an SME or start-up that tests its own technology in defence simulation software over 6 months: large language models for mission planning, operations simulation, or AI for swarms of autonomous vehicles (drones). You can apply alone or with up to 2 partners. The budget is small (€1.2 million), so competition will be tough.

Who can apply

SMEs and start-ups (fewer than 250 staff, turnover up to €50 million) established in and controlled from the EU, Norway or Ukraine, alone or in a team of up to 3 organisations. Research bodies and universities only as complementary partners where no suitable SME exists. The company must be incorporated and have a VAT number before the deadline.

What it pays for

A 6-month experiment in one of three topics: 1) large language models (LLMs) for strategic decisions and mission planning, 2) multi-physics simulation for naval, submarine, electronic-warfare and land/air operations, 3) distributed AI for coordinated swarms of autonomous vehicles. A lump sum covering up to 100% of direct staff costs (up to €60,000 per organisation, up to €180,000 per experiment); subcontracting is not covered. Includes up to 2 hours of one-to-one coaching.

Research notes: Cascade funding (financial support to third parties) from the EDF research project BattleVerse (EDF 2024, grant agreement 101224034), listed on the official EUDIS cascade-funding page (max €60,000 per third party, SMEs and start-ups prioritised, recipients in the EU, EDF associated countries or Ukraine). EMS call page: published/opened 14 Sep 2026 12:00, closes 16 Nov 2026 17:00 Brussels time; the project's open-calls page shows '14 September 2025' as opening date (apparently a typo). Guide for Applicants: budget €1.2M, up to €60k per beneficiary and €180k per experiment, lump sum covering up to 100% of eligible (direct personnel) costs, 6 months, 30% initial and 70% final payment, thresholds 3/4/3 and total ≥11, ranking with tie-breaks; selection may also weigh topic, geographic and sector spread. FAQ: aims to fund up to 20 third-party beneficiaries; one experiment per consortium; results owned by the sub-grantee; a non-EU-controlled entity may be eligible only with a Member State guarantee (Art. 9(4) EDF Regulation). A second BattleVerse sub-call is planned (EUDIS page), no dates. The EDF 2026 main calls (incl. the SME-only calls, which need at least 3 companies from 3 countries) closed on 29 Sep 2026.
